Lineage, created by Karine Vinchon Spehner for Amouage in 2023, explores the house's deep relationship with ancient resins and incense materials. The name refers to heritage and lineage — and the fragrance earns this concept with a composition rooted in the oldest perfumery traditions.
The opening deploys Sichuan pepper (the numbing-tingling spice of Chinese cuisine), ginger, schinus molle (pink peppercorn's woody relative) and saffron. Together they create a sharp, spiced, mineral-edged opening that is immediate and distinctive. Saffron's metallic-leathery facet is particularly forward in this opening phase.
The heart introduces frankincense essence and myrrh essence — both in their more volatile, 'fresh' forms rather than the heavier resinoids they become in the base. Fenugreek adds a coffee-curry earthy spice that grounds the heart between aromatic and resinous territory.
The base — frankincense resinoid, myrrh resinoid, vetiver, patchouli, benzoin and labdanum — is where Lineage settles into its full character.
