Amouage's Music Albums collection, of which Figment Man (2017) forms a part, treats each fragrance as an album — a sustained, coherent meditation on a theme rather than a single note. Figment Man asks its existential question through the language of Eastern incense and unexpected florals.
The opening with Sichuan pepper, saffron and bergamot is arresting — almost confrontational, in the way fine Amouage fragrances often are. The heart is where the fragrance reveals its paradox: jasmine, lily, ylang-ylang and orange blossom in a masculine composition, these florals do not feminise but rather deepen. They provide the emotional complexity the fragrance demands.
The base of papyrus, orris, patchouli and incense is long-lasting and solemn, like the end of a musical phrase that resolves into silence. Few fragrances carry this much deliberate emotional weight.
